Built Flash/wont boot 02 Dec 2011 02:55 #1637

I just completed building a PowerPC on a Sandisk Cruzar 8GB.

1. It would not appear on the Preferences Startup (although my old Protege still did).
2. I ran disk utility to verify permissions:

Repairing permissions for “Mac OS X PowerPC”
Reading permissions database.
Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
Permissions repair complete

I rebooted, holding down the OPTION key to scan for bootable devices - it didn't appear.

Are there certain USB flash drives that are not supported?

The new drive did have the disk with the black circle and yellow tool in it...

I am using this on a Dual 2.0 PowerPC and it's plugged DIRECTLY into the FRONT (built-in USB).

Sorry about the oversight. In general, PowerPC models cannot boot from a USB device. Postings in the old MacFixIt Forums suggested that the reason is that the USB bus is reset early in the boot.

There are in fact a very few PowerPC models that can be made to boot from a USB device, if you modify their Open Firmware. I do not recommened doing that, because you might find yourself with an eight-year old paperweight.
