disk8 - I/O Error reported and I don't have this disk 13 Jul 2017 20:02 #8445

Techtool Pro 9.5.1 reports today an I/O error on disk5.
This disk is not in Disk Utility nor in About this Mac in the system report under SATA/SATA Express where I see all my disks.

You probably have had a disk5 at some time in the recent past.

The i/o test is checking the All Messages log, or in more recent versions of the system software, the system.log file. You can read that log using the Console application, located in /Applications/Utilities. The disk5 may not be a volume on a hard drive or USB memory stick; it could be a disk image that is no longer mounted.

Here are some examples of i/o errors in the All Messages log of OS X 10.10.5, found by searching for i/o:

7/11/17 6:36:35.000 PM kernel[0]: disk2s2: I/O error.
7/11/17 11:14:46.000 PM kernel[0]: disk2s2: I/O error.
7/12/17 9:46:49.000 PM kernel[0]: disk2s2: I/O error.
7/12/17 10:50:31.000 PM kernel[0]: disk2s2: I/O error.
7/13/17 12:20:17.000 AM kernel[0]: disk2s2: I/O error.
7/13/17 1:57:30.000 AM kernel[0]: disk2s1: I/O error.
7/13/17 7:26:40.000 AM kernel[0]: disk2s2: I/O error.
7/13/17 7:50:09.000 AM kernel[0]: disk2s2: I/O error.

The reason for the error is the fact that the drive has spun down.
