tried two different USB3 thumb drives. First wouldn't boot, hung on Yosemite progress bar with mouse cursor frozen. Bought a new, unused drive this AM, this one boots to an unusably slow finder, launched TTP8, couldn't select the tools icon to do a directory rebuild.

Please try repairing permissions and reinstalling TechTool Pro 8. I assume you were using ProToGo 5.0.1, which is included with TechTool Pro 8.0.1.

One other thing you could try is to create a new administrative user account, and while logged in with that account, create a new ProToGo device using the Basic profile.

The reason that approach might work is that in some cases, when the user account folders needed by the ProToGo device are copied to it, one or more of the folders contains large files that are not needed by the ProToGo device and which take up so much disk space that the ProToGo device does not have enough free space to create virtual memory swapfiles.

I wonder if there is a way to tell which folders this would be, and if it would be worth while to clear out some of the user folders -- lot of junk collects in there.

The folders are usually ones the user created, so there is no way we can predict their presence in advance.

The section of the TechTool Pro 8.0.1 manual that deals with TechTool Protogo begins on page 7.1 of the pdf file. The section is essentially a copy of the Protogo manual, and should get a few revisions that take into account the incorporation of Protogo into TechTool Pro.
