TOPIC: This just does not work

This just does not work 13 Dec 2014 18:34 #5999

Hi

iMac 2010, mavericks.

Installed Protogo 4 and then updated to latest. Used the installer to create a basic USB volume.

Can not boot from the volume.

When trying to run tech tool 7 from it (without booting) nothing works.

First, make sure that the USB memory stick is formatted with a GUID partition map and a single Mac OS Extended (journaled) volume.

TechTool Pro must always be run from the active boot volume. Even if your Protogo device were bootable, you would not be able to run the copy of TechTool Pro on the Protogo device without booting from it.

Try repairing permissions and reinstalling TechTool Protogo 4.0.5. If that does not allow you to make a working Protogo device, please send a message to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . You will receive a reply by email on Monday, and may be asked to send in some log files. The contents of the Protogo device will have to be examined. You may be asked if you can create a Protogo device using the Minimal profile. Thank you.

One other suggestion I can make, which has worked in cases in which eDrives were not bootable, is to create a new administrative account, and while logged in as the new administrative user, create the Protogo device.

The reason this approach can work is that folders from the user folder are copied to the eDrive or Protogo device, and if those folders contain large, unexpected files, they can fill the eDrive or Protogo device to capacity, leaving insufficient free disk space for the creation of virtual memory swapfiles. The first virtual memory swapfile, swapfile0, is created during the boot.
