Why does Checkmate run surface scan on SSD 01 Aug 2014 16:19 #5684

I have several Macs, (iMac and MBP) retrofitted with Samsung Evo 840 SSD's. Checkmate continues to run surface scans on these. Why?

The Surface Scan test would probably be given a different name if it were new today, but its function remains crucial. It reads blocks on a hard drive, and reads the memory cells in an SSD drive. The memory cells can become defective, and we have already had a few customers report finding errors (unremapped unreadable memory cells) on SSD drives.

I suggest that you save the results of the Surface Scan test, in case a later run of the test finds errors, so you can use the test results in a warranty claim.
