Check Mate Volume Error Reports 20 Nov 2012 03:56 #3254

Attachment ScreenShot2012-11-19at11.50.56AM.jpg not found

Hello,

I have a 3TB External that I use for TM on my iMac. Since installing CM, it has reported a volume partition error on this volume now twice. The first time, I ran DU and did a disk repair which then rendered a passing grade from CM

Today in inspecting the CM log file I see another red X for volume error on the same 3TB External..see screen shot attached.

Do you have an idea as to why this may be continuing to happen?

A "partition structure error" is most likely a minor error in the partition map of the device, rather than a disk directory error in a particular volume on the device. Sufficiently-recent versions of Disk Utility can attempt to repair the partition map. Assuming that you did not already do this, please use Disk Utility as shown in this posting (note that the device, not the volume, is selected; the button to be clicked has an inappropriate name):

Thanks, I'll give that a try and see how it turns out.

I just tried to run DU on the 3TB drive not the volume and got the following error message. How would proceed from here?

I have seen several articles about this problem, but I have not seen a definitive explanation so far. I suggest that you search at Google for the expression:

"Partition map repair failed while"

There are, unfortunately, many hits including:

Is Mountain Lion mishandling large drives?

If I had the problem, I would want to make a backup of the drive, run the Surface Scan in TechTool Pro or allow Checkmat to check it for unremapped bad blocks, and then reformat the drive, restore the files, and then see if the problem persists.

Re: Check Mate Volume Error Reports 20 Nov 2012 07:35 #3259

Since the 3TB drive is being used as my TM drive backing up my internal HDD, plus 2 externals, I can not back it up. It would be a matter of testing and or reformatting with the data intact.

How can I set up CM to check the 3TB for "unremapped bad blocks"? All of my data is stable on all the volumes that TM is backing up and is only about 2 months old, so if I did need to reformat the 3TB it would not cause me to lose any data I would need to recover.

The tests in Checkmate run only when your computer is not in use, and there is no way to prompt the running of a particular test. Check the Checkmate log to see if the Surface Scan has run.

If you have TechTool Pro, you can run its Surface Scan.

Yes, surface scan has run. My log shows that from 11/17 until today at 4:10PM it has scanned my 3TB drive in partial portions 8 times with 8 scans showing up with a green check mark and a one time red X indicating the error.

Thanks for the update. It is interesting to see that the scan of the 3TB drive was in 8 parts.

Here's an example of what I was referring to as partial portions with the green check marks.

I'll run a surface scan and see what turns up. I'd guess that will take a long time for a 3TB drive.

What puzzles me is that the drive is only about 3 months old, not that, that does not mean there might not be some bad blocks

If you have TechTool Pro, start the Surface Scan as soon as you are finished using the computer tonight. It will take hours.

Checkmate does not run tests while the TechTool Pro or Disk Utility applications are open.

Here's a screen shot of the results of the surface scan on the 3TB that is getting the errors in CM.

Looks like there were no errors found, which I guess gets us back to the article you highlighted on how ML is handling some externals. Would you agree, or perhaps is there an anomaly in CM?

Re: Check Mate Volume Error Reports 21 Nov 2012 01:59 #3268

Thanks for the results of the Surface Scan.

I do not see any problem with how Checkmate is working in your case. It reports a problem with the partition map, which the relevant feature in Disk Utility is unable to repair. If you have AppleCare, I would report the problem to Apple, which may ask you to run a utility that collects a lot of data about your computer.

Yes, I do have Apple Care. Will contact them to report findings.

Re: Check Mate Volume Error Reports 21 Nov 2012 07:08 #3271

Just spoke with Apple Care. They recommend reformatting the 3TB drive and that doing so should correct the problem, DU is having in repairing the partition table.

Based on your technical expertise would you agree?

Re: Check Mate Volume Error Reports 21 Nov 2012 07:12 #3272

I agree that you should reformat the drive. The postings I have seen online do not make it clear whether the problem with the partition table will arise again.

Re: Check Mate Volume Error Reports 21 Nov 2012 07:17 #3273

Ok thanks,

Since my TM backup only goes two months back, and my externals are stable, I'll give the reformat a try to see if it corrects the problem.

Thanks for the support.

Reformatted my 3TB drive and cleared the log file in CM. After two days of running CM with reformatted drive it looks like all is now well with passing status indicated.

See screen shot.

The screen shot in my last note shows "Files Pending". This status has been this way now for 3 days. Is this normal or should CM have been running this test?

Re: Check Mate Volume Error Reports 27 Nov 2012 07:00 #3298

Whether tests should have run depends on whether you were using your Macintosh, and whether you had applications that prevent the tests from running, such as TechTool Pro or Disk Utility, open.

If you use the Send Report feature in the Checkmate menu of the Checkmate application, we can examine the log file that shows what tests ran, and why others did not.

I have not had either TTP or DU running during the last 3 days.

I'll send you a report for evaluation.

The Surface Scan and File Structures test run every few days rather than once every twenty-four hours, to prevent excessive wear on the drive.
