Surface Scan (again) - 2010/07/25 12:33 I have seen the question asked, but no definitive answer. So here is my stats:

I have a MBP with a 250gb drive. It is booted from an edrive on an external drive and has been running surface scan for a couple of days!!!. It is doing something because I can see the numbers changing (including the amount of time running and left that keeps going up and down from a few min to another 12 hours). Right now it says:
Number of blocks on device: 488,397,168
Number of blocks processed: 323,399
Elapsed time 11:41:35 (which is nowhere near how much time it has used)
Estimated time to completion 18:23:44
1628 bad blocks encountered

Do I wait another 18 hours? Is something wrong? is 1629 blocks bad (Very bad?)?
should I start again? Should I start looking for new drive?

Thanks for any help

Re:Surface Scan (again) - 2010/07/25 13:02 The reason the Surface Scan is taking so long is that the program is having trouble reading magnetic media that has catastrophically failed.

You should replace the drive immediately. Please see this discussion of bad blocks. You have already found about 1625 more bad blocks than you need to decide to replace the drive. There is no need to complete the running of the Surface Scan. It has done its job.
